Aly Verjee has followed Sudan since 1998. He lived in Sudan from 2005 to 2010, in both Khartoum and Juba. He was formerly deputy and then acting chief of staff of the Joint Monitoring and Evaluation Commission (JMEC) in South Sudan, senior political advisor to the chief mediator of the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD)-led peace process for South Sudan, chief political analyst for the European Union observation mission for the South Sudan independence referendum, and deputy director of the Carter Center's election observation mission in Sudan.
